Adieu, beloved Anty Joanna.
Anty Joanna, who dedicated her life to the education and nurturing of young minds at Success Schools in Sokoto, held the esteemed position of my son’s class teacher. According to Joshua, who spoke with an earnestness that reflected both his admiration and grief, “She was the best teacher ever.” His eyes brimmed with tears this morning when we gently broke the news of her sudden passing from this earthly realm to her eternal home. Just last Thursday, we had all come together, filled with laughter and excitement, to participate in the vibrant inter-house sports day, an event that showcased the talents and spirited competition among the students. It now feels surreal to think how quickly life can change.
From the limited interactions I had with her personally, it was clear that Anty Joanna was not just an educator but a remarkable person with a kind spirit and a radiant beauty, always quick to offer a warm smile that could brighten anyone’s day. I’ve heard countless tales from Baba about her engaging teaching methods and her ability to connect with her students, illuminating their minds and encouraging their dreams. The love and admiration her public had for her were palpable; they spoke endlessly of her generosity, her nurturing nature, and the profound impact she made on their lives.
In the quiet moment that followed our heartfelt prayers for the comfort of the Lord, both for my son and the wider school community, Joshua looked up at me with his eyes filled with sorrow and asked, “But Mummy, Jesus Christ is taking so much time to come. I would not see her for a long time?” His question pierced my heart, for in his youthful innocence, he expressed the deep longing that many of us feel when confronted with loss. I reassured him gently that while it may feel like a long wait, the promise remains that one day, when Jesus returns, we will be reunited in the air, and that day draws nearer than we can fully comprehend.
If you find yourself feeling sad and nostalgic about loved ones who have departed to be with the Lord, I urge you to find comfort in the hope we hold through faith in Jesus Christ. May the scriptures provide solace to you today and in the days to come. . . . . Rest well, Anty Joanna. Though your time with us was all too brief, your memory and the positive impact you left behind will linger in our hearts forever. Keep resting in the loving embrace of the Lord.
Presence in Sorrow: “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).
Promises of Peace: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you” (John 14:27).
Hope of Resurrection: “For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him” (1 Thessalonians 4:14).
Rest for the Weary: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
Eternal Comfort: “He will swallow up death forever. The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces” (Isaiah 25:8).
