Educating traumatized Out-of-School Children helps in their recovery: A Hasken Arewa Foundation Initiative

Education can be an essential tool to help traumatized children recover and develop resiliency.

Trauma in children is a serious issue in Nigeria, as it is in many other countries. Children in Nigeria are exposed to a range of traumatic experiences, including violence, abuse, neglect, natural disasters, and terrorism. These experiences can have a profound impact on their mental and emotional well-being, as well as their physical health.

One of the most significant sources of trauma for children in Nigeria is the ongoing conflict and violence in many parts of the country, particularly in the North Region where the Boko Haram/Banditry insurgency has led to the displacement of thousands of children and families. Children who have been forced to flee their homes are at risk of experiencing trauma related to the violence they have witnessed or experienced, as well as the loss of family members and friends.

Other sources of trauma for children in Nigeria include physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, which is unfortunately prevalent in many communities. Neglect is also a significant issue, particularly for children who are living in poverty or who have been orphaned. Natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes can also cause trauma, particularly for children who lose their homes or loved ones in these events.

It is important to note that trauma can have long-lasting effects on children’s mental and physical health, and can affect their ability to learn, form healthy relationships, and function well in society. Parents, caregivers, and communities need to provide support and resources to help mitigate the effects of trauma on children in Nigeria. This can include access to mental health services, safe and supportive environments, and educational opportunities.

Here are some ways education can help:

1. Provides structure and routine: Traumatized children often struggle with feelings of uncertainty and lack of control. Education provides a structured routine that can help them feel safe and secure.

2. Offers a sense of normalcy: Education allows children to participate in activities that are common to their age range and can help them feel a sense of normalcy.

3. Promotes social interaction: Education allows children to interact with peers and develop positive relationships. This can help them build a sense of belonging and reduce feelings of isolation.

4. Builds self-esteem: Success in the classroom can help children build self-confidence and self-esteem. This can be particularly beneficial for children who may feel a sense of shame or stigma related to their trauma.

5. Provides opportunities for emotional expression: Education can offer opportunities for children to express their emotions and process their experiences in a safe and supportive environment.

6. Teaches coping skills: Education can teach children healthy coping skills to manage stress and regulate their emotions. This can be beneficial in managing symptoms related to trauma.

7. Fosters a sense of purpose: Education can help children develop a sense of purpose and hope for the future. This can be particularly important for children who may feel a sense of hopelessness or despair related to their traumatic experiences.

It is important to note that trauma can impact a child’s ability to learn and succeed in the classroom. Therefore, it is important to provide trauma-informed education that is sensitive to the needs of traumatized children. This may include providing additional support, such as counseling or extra academic assistance, to help them succeed, this is something that our foundation makes a high priority.
