PHANTASMAGORIA POEMS BY DR LAW MEFOR
Law Mefor’s poetry is unique in several respects as the title of the collection portrays. This is also reflected in his view of poetry production – that he does not even qualify to publish a poetry work as the impulse had to flow from his transcendental beingness like religious revelation. This reminds one of Dr Tunde Lakoju, a literary critic and poet who directed that his poems should only be published after his death for fear that it may not attain his poetry heaven-stead.
It is worthy to celebrate Mefor’s unique poetry’s ability to capture the creative spirit of the human mind, which enrich and bequeath us with the understanding of the human condition while softening our existential dilemmas through his ideas and outpourings as encapsulated in his poetry.
There is no doubt that poetry has immense infinitesimal openings for Mefor as he uitilizes it to release his innermost longings in a cataclysm which still lend us a quintessential voice. His poetry anthology covers a period of his romance with creative writing in the Association of Nigerian Authors in FCT in the late 90s when he dedicated his life to the muse, which tells us of another of poetry’s immense power of perception.
One of the collection “Never Call Me A Poet” is doubtless Mefor’s infinite experience and one that is much after his heart. And for articulating these thoughts for posterity after several decades, he has deserved the World Poetry Commitment Award which was conferred upon him during the ‘2022 World Poetry Day’. His work is indeed worthy of commendation and emulation.
The work is organized into five thematic thrusts with each consisting of a different panorama of issues from psychological to nationalism and thence to psychoanalytical matters like his emphasis on ‘My Chi’ which appeared severally across the chapters. Interestingly, Mefor’s penchant in particular with himself as a god typifies the spirit of his native name Muo……………………………………….
The central theme of the poetry pieces, even though not a common-place issue is a reflection of the unconscious thoughts of many. Mefor’s foray into the mind had definitely to do with his training as both a social and forensic psychologist which enables him to analyze issues from the standpoints of concrete and group dynamics.
And in robustly examining these topics, the work has succeeded in exposing them to another level that should be an eye-opener to a cross-section of the general reading public. A common style tied the poems and speaks with an urgent voice on matters of intimate immediacy which affects the bedrock of humanity that cannot be ignored.
I believe that by taking the lonely and tortuous road to deliver “Phantasmagoria” after several years of incubation, Law Mefor has once again joined the ranks of published authors in the prestigious poetry category. As no one poetry is exactly the same, it is hoped that both the young and adult would find the work worth appreciating.
It is therefore my honour and privilege to identify with the author of this priceless collection of poems. Consequently, I recommend the book to all and sundry as a fitting tribute to the limit of the sky for those high flying young men and women who have learnt to obey the call of the otherworldly voice. The work is a welcome addition to the corpus of poetry anthology on contemporary times and qualified for more accolades.
