Meet Dr. Gabmen Kennedy-Tajo

Q: What will you say is important to you in Life?

A: What’s important to me in life is family. It is the single most important thing to me in life. Family comes first in every decision that I make. It influences my everyday life, work-life, literally everything revolves around family.

Q. How has your career helped you in fulfilling His purpose on earth?

A: My Career has helped, in the sense that; at first, I wanted to become a medical doctor because they were all wearing white coats in the hospital, they looked nice and they were doing something very heroic. It made me see myself in the future doing these things that these people were doing. It was very cute and nice. I didn’t know those things that involved being a doctor until I grew up after secondary school when it was time to pick a career. But I think being a doctor has helped me in the sense that I can reach out to people physically, mentally, and even spiritually. I can reach out to them physically in the sense that I can give them medication and they get well. I can treat their diseases, I can help their physical bodies to heal from whatever disease they might have.

Then psychologically or mentally, I have been able to speak to a lot of patients who are going through mental trauma involved in their diagnosis. For example, currently, I am in hematology which is, I am looking at people with blood cancer. There are a lot of people who are younger than me that have this cancer. Just the fact that they have this illness, depresses them. They just feel like there is no way out. I have been able to talk to these patients especially the younger ones because it’s so sad when you see someone who is young and you know that they have a full life ahead of them know that they are unwell. And knowing that they are not going to make it. So I speak to these people during the ward rounds or just, later on, sit down and take off that doctor code, keep it aside and relate to them as humans; people that I understand and I feel their pain. I might not understand it really, but I can tell you, you are going to be okay. Just hold on to God, if you are a Christian just trust in God, keep a positive mind.

Do things that will distract you from just thinking about your diagnosis. I have advised them on even mind relaxation techniques. Just encourage them the way I can and things like that. I have reached out to people, say physically and mentally.

Back in Nigeria, you know how horrible the system is. There are times when I had to give out my money to treat patients because these patients have been treated and they have a hospital bill to pay and the hospital won’t discharge without that bill being paid. So I had to fill up this kind of thing.

At least we are just human at the end of the day. So I will say my career in some way has helped me to reach out to people in every way that I would have loved to. When I mean every way. I have reached out to their relatives, things like that. I have had patients that have called me months after to say “thank you so much. You helped us. You did well and this baby is doing well today. This baby has grown…” Things like that.

Q. What do you love about being a Mum?

A: Being a mom is gorgeous. The most important thing about being a mom is the fact that I can look back and see where the years have gone into. When I look at myself, I am 33, and where the years have gone into, I turn and look at my lovely boys, I see that this is where the years went to. I look at my husband and see this is where the years went to. So being a mom is a constant reminder to me that this is where I have invested some of my life into and this is the most important thing in my life: raising children, having a lovely home, having a good family, just teaching them what I can teach them and just grooming them to be better than myself.

It has its challenges which we all know, it has its big challenges. You know, your career suffers a bit, your personal life suffers a bit, your love life with your husband suffers a bit but at the end of it all, children are the loveliest things that God ever gave to humanity. So I love just being with my children. That’s the best thing I will say. The fact that I can look at them and say this is what I have to show for the time.

Q. How do we solve the problems in Nigeria?

A: First thing first, the leaders need to be scrapped out. We need young minds, we need fresh blood, we need great ideas, we need intelligent people and bring back all our expertise from abroad. When you look at every country, you see that Nigerians or Africans are topping the chart which is in every sector. Imagine all that expertise being brought back home. It’s going to blow the world.

Nigeria will just end up being the giant of the world if we bring back all our expertise if we harness our resources.

So really, how do we solve the problem in Nigeria? We need to tackle bad leadership. We need to elect new people; young blood fresh minds. Corruption needs to go. Insecurity needs to go for people to come up with business ideas, bring people back to the country, investors, and all of those things. So insecurity needs to be tackled. Corruption needs to be tackled. Even literally, people’s mindset needs to change. It’s not all about government. It’s not all about leaders. It’s the average Nigerian on the streets that needs to change his/her mindset in terms of “how can I help myself. How can I develop myself? How can I develop the society.” Not looking at, “How can I steal. How can I reap somebody off? How can I wait for somebody to give me it? How can I wait for the government to feed me.”
So that’s it. The main thing. Change our mindset. Change the leaders. Tackle corruption and insecurity and bring back our expertise.

Q. Who are you?

A: I am Gab. I am a mom. A lover of God, a wife, and a lot to all my friends. I love my career. I love my family. I love my close friends. And I keep my circle very close. I am down to earth. I love safe and I love quiet; I don’t like noise. And I don’t like drama and I don’t like people who come with drama and I love to reach out to people in ways that I can. And I love to just inspire people as much as I can, even as much as I like to keep a little circle to myself, I also love to reach out as much as I can.
