The Girl Child
Have you ever felt not included like the Girl child Invited, or even wanted? This negative feeling can be devastating. I would dare say each one of us has on earth, felt this way, in one way or the other, we all struggle with the need for acceptance and love.
Imagine feeling not being appreciated, or even considered, feeling lost and alone or even helpless just because you are female.
The narrative about the girl child is that her living conditions and survival in Nigeria and the preferential treatment of boy children. Though there is a great awareness of empowering and empowered female Girls are still discriminated against in Nigeria in access to educational opportunities, food, and nutrition. Girls carry a heavy burden of farm work and housework. Girls are married off at early ages, which interferes with their education or acquisition of skills needed for survival. Beliefs must be changed about the value of girl children because abrupt economic development is dependent upon the elimination of gender bias.
Do we wait for the government and the man who would rather not empower the woman? No and no way! It is the responsibility of women to let girls know that they have choices and those choices span as many as possible and we have to believe this too. Let women be known as that place where other women and girls come to find the tools to actualize their dreams. We have to change the conversation by letting women and girls know that they have this opportunity and also empowering them to pursue these opportunities.
You are powerful and capable of achieving all that you put your mind to, start where you are and the resources at hand, grow from your faith and when education offers itself don’t think twice because you have the intellect for acquiring an education no matter your age and financial background.
I look for you as we meet at the top but make sure you don’t come up alone and bring a girl along. So push girls towards education, not early marriage. Also, believe in them and stand for them as they face and heal from their traumas.
I strongly believe in the change you will bring, the hope you will inspire, and how valuable you will remain for generations to come, so look out and be a star. Don’t be discouraged, don’t stop moving, and let nothing silence your voice. I believe in you!
