‎The Girl Child

‎Have you ever experienced the profound sense of exclusion that the girl child often feels? It’s a subtle yet painful sensation, an invisible barrier that leaves one yearning for acceptance and a sense of belonging, often making them feel unwanted or overlooked. This negative feeling can be utterly devastating, a heavy weight on the heart of anyone who has encountered such a reality. I would venture to assert that each and every one of us, at some point in our lives, has grappled with this deep-seated desire for love and acceptance. We are all united in our human experience, searching for validation in a world that occasionally overlooks our inherent worth.

‎Imagine waking up each day feeling unappreciated and undervalued, perceiving the world around you as indifferent or even hostile, all because of your gender. Envision the sense of being lost, alone, or utterly helpless, feeling as though society has set a predetermined path for you simply because you are female.

‎The ongoing narrative surrounding the girl child, especially in the context of Nigeria, paints a disheartening picture of her living conditions and survival challenges, juxtaposed against the preferential treatment often afforded to boys. Despite the increasing awareness surrounding the empowerment of girls, there remains a grim reality where girls continue to face discrimination when it comes to accessing educational opportunities, nutritional resources, and even basic food. The weight of expectation often thrust upon them is immense; they are expected to carry out strenuous farm work alongside the heavy burdens of domestic chores. Many are forced into early marriages, an unsettling path that severely interrupts their education and stunts their acquisition of essential life skills necessary for flourishing in society.

‎It is imperative that we shift our beliefs regarding the value of girl children because our collective economic development hinges on the urgent need to eradicate gender bias from our societal framework.

‎Should we sit idly by, waiting for government action or relying on those who are reluctant to empower women? Absolutely not! It is our collective responsibility, especially as women, to ensure that girls understand the breadth of choices available to them, choices that can be as diverse and expansive as they dare to imagine. We must nurture an environment where girls can seek the tools and support needed to actualize their dreams. By altering the conversation, we can empower women and girls alike, imparting the critical understanding that opportunities await them, and bolstering their confidence to pursue those possibilities.

‎You possess an immense power within you, an inherent capability that allows you to achieve everything that you set your mind to accomplish; it is essential to start from your current situation with the resources readily available to you, utilizing the strengths you already possess. Nurture your growth through your unwavering faith, and when opportunities for education arise, do not hesitate for even a moment, as you undoubtedly have the intellectual capacity to pursue and acquire knowledge regardless of your age or financial circumstances.

I envision a future where we meet at the pinnacle of success together, but I urge you to ensure that your ascent is not a solitary journey—extend your hand and bring along a girl who may also benefit from this path. It is crucial to encourage young women towards the pursuit of education rather than allowing the constraints of early marriage to cut short their potential. Furthermore, stand firm in your belief in their capabilities and be there for them as they navigate through the challenges they face and the healing process from their past traumas.

‎I strongly believe in the change you will bring, the hope you will inspire, and how valuable you will remain for generations to come, so look out and be a star. Don’t be discouraged, don’t stop moving, and let nothing silence your voice. I believe in you!
